A. What is Intellectual Disability?
Intellectual disability is a developmental disability that is characterised by limitations in the intellectual ability and in the adaptive ability of the individual.
B. Types of Intellectual Disability
There are different degrees of Intellectual disability:
Mild ID: Individuals with mild Intellectual disability have an IQ of about 50-70. They can learn skills and live independently with the least amount of support from others.
D. Causes of Intellectual Disability
Intellectual Disability can be caused due to multiple factors:
Environmental factors: alcohol consumptions by the mother during pregnancy, exposure to toxins
E. Screening and assessment for Intellectual Disability
Intellectual disability is characterized by 3 main signs:
Limitation in intellectual functioning
Limitation in adaptive behaviors in different environments
F. Treatment For Intellectual Disability
Depending on the severity of the condition, various therapies and interventions are used for the child. The most common among them are educational interventions, early interventions, behavioural and cognitive-behavioural interventions, family education, social intervention and pharmacological treatments, if needed.
